Wisdom Teeth & What Your Dentist Can Do
If you're in your late twenties or older and you still have a mouth free of wisdom teeth, you might be thinking you'll never have to worry about them coming through. Likewise, you're probably hoping that will be the case.
Many people who do get their wisdom teeth end up struggling with significant pain and discomfort or even overcrowding as their mouth struggles to find room for the extra teeth. A trip to the dentist can help you understand your situation and address any discomfort these strange teeth may be causing. If you're in the Bedford, Euless, or Colleyville TX area, Dr. Vartikar can help!
What Are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth are essentially a third set of molars which come through later in our lives. According to anthropologists, they became necessary when the diets of our early ancestors changed. Once we started chewing rough foods like nuts and meats, it was thought that this chewing would wear away our old teeth and, thus, we’d benefit from getting a couple of new ones.
The average age for the emergence of wisdom teeth is between 17 and 25. So, if you're currently 28 and you still don't have any wisdom teeth, you may just be in luck! That said, wisdom teeth can come through even when you're very old — it's even possible in your 80s!
Why Do Wisdom Teeth Erupt So Late?
There are many different causes behind this. To an extent, it's just luck, and your wisdom teeth will come through at different points defined by genetic and environmental factors. At the same time, wisdom teeth may come through late for other reasons, which is where a wisdom teeth dentist can come in handy.
One reason why you might not have seen your wisdom teeth yet could be that they're facing the wrong way. Sometimes, wisdom teeth can lie entirely on their sides, in which case there's nowhere for them to grow! In other cases, wisdom teeth might be trapped by your jawbone or other bones. In other cases, one might be trapped while the others are free to move.
If you have wisdom teeth trapped in your jaw, this won't normally cause you any discomfort and they can remain there with no problem. In other situations, there may be symptoms which can be helped by your local dentist.
The real problem is when there isn’t space in your mouth for new teeth, or they’re facing the wrong angle but they come through anyway. This is when wisdom teeth can cause more serious symptoms like overcrowding and pain, difficulty cleaning, cavities, and lead you to seriously consider wisdom teeth removal.

Another possibility is that you might not have any wisdom teeth at all. While this is less common, it does happen, and sometimes a quick X-ray will confirm or deny the presence of wisdom teeth.
